Utica College’s Black Student Union hosted their annual event, “Fright the Fashion Show” on Oct. 28, just in time for the Halloween weekend. Students filed into Strebel Student Lounge to see their classmates showcase their catwalks and costumes.

“It was a lot of fun to see the people you see every day dressed up as someone else on stage strutting their stuff in face paint and masks,” said junior Jaida DeGristina.

The event signified a great turnout, with six contestants competing for that number one spot. Like many other events on campus, the purpose of the event was to bring the Utica College campus community together, to entertain, excite and take everyone’s minds off of academics.

“It was a nice treat to my Friday,” said DeGristina. “I was out of class twenty minutes later after it started and I only popped right into Strebel to stop and get dinner and the next thing you know I was there for 45 minutes.”

The show even included a “Gender Bender”, where some contestants had the chance to dress up as the opposite sex.

“The Gender Bender definitely was my favorite part,” said junior Alexia Colacicco. “It was hilarious to see my friends dressed up in the opposite genders clothes, but it didn’t poke fun. It actually made a valid statement that there are people who actually dress as the opposite gender in real life for whatever reasons they desire. It was a funny, yet an eye opening moment.”

Vice President Ransey Perry said she commends all of the participants. “It takes a lot for someone to go up in front of their peers, so I thank them for signing up, I thank them for showing up and competing. Without them, there wouldn’t be a show.”

Junior, Krismairy Sanchez took home first place for best costume with her interpretation of a skeleton.

BSU also holds many other events throughout the year. With over 40 members, the organization promotes awareness of the African American culture, but also spreads diversity throughout the campus community. Join them for an open discussion on cultural appreciation at their My Culture is Not a Costume event on Nov. 10 at 4:30 p.m.
