Vandalism hits parking lots

James McClendon, Editor-in-Chief

On Wednesday, the UC community received an email regarding the recent acts of vandalism that occurred in one of the parking lots.

According to Director of Campus Safety Wayne Sullivan, the incidents occurred in the Burrstone parking lot. Three cars were broken into with two having their windows smashed in. A small amount of loose change and a pair of headphone were reported as stolen.

The email encourages students, faculty and staff to make certain they lock their doors and windows each time they leave their vehicles. It also states that valuables should be taken inside or kept out of plain sight.

Campus safety will also be taking measures to ensure the safety of individuals and property.

“We are doing more patrols and we have hooked up with St. Luke’s to help patrol the Burrstone parking lot because they have security around all the time,” Sullivan said.

Sophomore Ben Bosworth keeps his car on campus and hopes that campus safety will be increasing its coverage of the lots. He talked about one other way to reduce crime on campus.

“I feel that extra lighting would be a good idea,” Bosworth said. “We seem to have a very dark campus and crime tends to be committed in the dark.”

Sullivan said that campus safety will do everything they can to ensure students faculty and staff are protected, but they need everyone to be vigilant in reporting when they see something happening.

“Criminals are smart, they are not going to do anything while we are there,” Sullivan said.

The email closed by stating, “If you notice any suspicions activity, or have any information related to the recent acts of vandalism, please contact us at

315-792-3046.”
