Trump dominates middle America, wins battleground states

James McClendon, Editor-in-Chief

It’s official. Donald J. Trump will become the 45th president of the United States.

According to the Associated Press, Trump achieved his unprecedented victory by capitalizing on the economic anxieties and racial tensions that run rampant across the nation. He was able to overcome his many controversial comments and a number of sexual assault allegations that arose throughout the election.

UC Associate Professor of Government and Politics Luke Perry talked about the reasons why Trump won the election.

“Trump won because he communicated a compelling enough message to non-college educated, white, male, rural, voters, that helped tip the balance in key swing states, and Midwestern states, which typically vote Democratic in presidential elections,” Perry said. “He had a narrow path to victory, but executed his strategy more successfully than analysts, pundits, and both campaigns, ever envisioned.”

During Trump’s acceptance speech, he spoke about the American people coming together.

“I can only say that while the campaign is over, our work on this movement is now really just beginning,” Trump said. “We’re going to get to work immediately for the American people, and we’re going to be doing a job that hopefully you will be so proud of your President. You will be so proud. Again, it’s my honor.”

UC Junior Ivan Iton believes that it doesn’t matter what people think of Trump, because he is going to be the next president.

“I feel like Trump will do what he can to help turn the country around,” Iton said. “I feel like he has to bring all of the citizens in this country together again after this election. He’s our president elect now and everyone will have to accept it and come together to better each other and our country.”

Perry believes there will be many consequences as a result of this election.

“Americans can expect Republicans, who now control more power in American government than any other time in recent memory,” Perry said, “to undo much of what President Obama accomplished over the last eight years and simultaneously pursue Trump’s campaign priorities, including restrictions on immigration, greater border security, repealing The Affordable Care Act, and tax cuts for all, including the wealthiest Americans.”

UC graduate George Shultz was a big supporter of Trump and voted for him on Tuesday.

“I think its great for our country,” Shultz said. “His political views should be able to make this country great again.”
