Something I have noticed, the longer I have been here, is that fewer students attend campus events. I have also noticed a lack of decorations at many of these events. The Utica Activity Board recently held an event in Strebel Student Center that I enjoyed, which involved decorating a sign to hang on your door. While the idea was good and the activity was fun, the event itself did not feel very exciting. I believe the main issue was presentation. The idea was there, but the way it was presented could have been more engaging.
I also believe the low attendance at many campus events is because students are no longer interested in what organizations consider “classic” events. We are a new generation of students who engage differently. To increase participation, campus organizations should create new, innovative events that reflect current student interests rather than relying on traditional formats that no longer resonate.
I believe if the Student Government Association invested in bulk event supplies it would significantly improve student engagement. Consistent access to decorations such as balloons, tablecloths and themed materials would allow organizations to not only to host events but also create an inviting and engaging atmosphere. When events lack visual appeal, they can feel incomplete and fail to attract students. Enhancing the overall experience would make campus events more appealing and encourage more participation.
For example, the Utica Activity Board has its own budget, unlike some other campus organizations. However, when events are held, it is not that the organizers are not putting in the work; rather, student interest is declining. While events may still take place, students are not always getting the best experience. The events often do not feel exciting or visually engaging. Decorations play a big role in creating excitement and drawing students in. As a student leader on campus, I believe SGA should invest in bulk decorations and encourage stronger collaboration with other clubs. Greater collaboration would allow organizations to share resources, coordinate events and create more engaging and enjoyable experiences for students.
