The Tangerine recently spoke to C.O.R.E Vice President and Health Science major Maty Hane. C.O.R.E stands for Community, Opportunities, Respect and Empowerment.
What is C.O.R.E’s mission?
At C.O.R.E, we’re dedicated to everyone — not just a specific group. Our goal is to bring people together and create a sense of community where everyone feels welcome and included. For example, we’ve set up a
buddy system for students who want to attend events but don’t want to go alone. It’s all about connection, support and belonging.
What kind of events do you plan/host?
We have been trying to host more like buddy events. For example,
you may not have anyone to come to the game with you, we are trying to cater to you. We can be that person that can be there for you.
How can students get involved?
Students can go to PioHub or look at our flyer around or on social media
and we are always around campus. We meet on Thursdays at 7 p.m. in Willcox.
What values are most important to C.O.R.E?
Our foundation is built on respect and empowerment — values that guide how we treat each other and how we grow together as a community.
Respect means valuing every person for who they are. We believe everyone deserves to be heard, seen and appreciated. At C.O.R.E, we create a space where kindness, understanding, and inclusion are at the center of everything we do. We celebrate our differences and learn from one another, knowing that respect builds the trust and unity that hold us together. Empowerment means lifting each other up — especially in moments when we feel down. We encourage one another to keep going, to grow, and to believe in ourselves. C.O.R.E is about finding strength through
community and helping each person discover their potential. We don’t just talk about community — we live it. Through respect and empowerment, we strive to make a difference in each other’s lives and in the world around us.
