Mathematics professor Linda Welch has worked with the Utica College community since 2001.  Welch grew up in Rochester and she currently resides in Deerfield, not too far from UC.

After retiring from teaching all levels of high school Mathematics for 33 years, Welch said she still loves to teach. It is currently her 20th year being a mathematics professor at UC.

“Before working as a professor at Utica College, I have worked as a math tutor and teacher within the schools in New York State,” Welch said. “I went to college in Potsdam where I earned my Bachelor’s, and in Cortland where I have earned my Master’s.

Working with students is her favorite part of the job.

“Personally, I like having students in class who feel the study of mathematics to be a challenge for many different reasons,” she said. “Having the interaction and working with students is the best part of teaching.”

Welch currently teaches Intermediate Algebra (MAT 124) and Basic Math (MAT 100) as part of her job. When she first came to UC two decades ago, she said she enjoyed the way students were in her classes.

“The first semester I taught a class here at UC, the students were very accepting and respectful of each others’ mathematical abilities in that class,” she said. “They would work together solving problems and asking questions without hesitation.”

Welch also appreciated whenever students came to her for extra help. She loves the interactions from not only the UC students but also the UC faculty and staff on campus.

“Often the students would stay after class ended for extra help and to help each other,” she said. “It was the students who drew me to Utica College. We have the best students!”
