Senior point guard Ashley Mayo etched her name into Utica College basketball history last week.

Mayo became just the 12th player in program history to eclipse 1,000 career points during a road conference game on Jan. 27 against St. John Fisher College.

Mayo said it feels unreal having accomplished the milestone and that she is “extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to do so.” She reflected on her freshman year at UC.

“I was just hoping that I’d be able to actually play as a freshman,” Mayo said. “I would have never thought that I’d end up being even close to becoming a 1,000 point scorer.”

Mayo also remembered checking into her first college basketball game. She said that she was trying to prove herself.

“I remember just really trying to make the best out of the little minutes I was getting,” Mayo said. “Whether it had been defensively, rebounding or just sticking to the team plan.”

When she scored that 1,000th point, Mayo said that she did not think anything of it because “it was just another bucket, it didn’t really soak in until after the game.”

With her team trailing big to St. John Fisher, Mayo explained that she was more focused on making a comeback than a personal achievement.

So, now that the milestone is reached what’s next for Mayo?

She said she has her heart set on making the playoffs for her last year as a member of the team.

“We have a lot of tough competition in the Empire 8,” Mayo said. “Aside from all of that, I know that we have the potential and courage to beat every single team in our conference.”

Classmate Alaina Tripp is grateful for having Mayo as a teammate for her four years as a Pioneer and admires her work ethic and drive to be successful.

“She is one of the hardest working people that I know,” Tripp said. “I don’t know anyone who worked harder in the offseason than she did.”

Tripp also said that she is “extraordinarily proud of her (Mayo), and she undoubtedly deserves this accomplishment.”

Senior forward Maggie Tabone also praised Mayo as “one of the hardest workers” she knows.

“I’m honored to have played a small role in this and had the opportunity to be here for the journey with Mayo,” Tabone said.

“She spent her whole offseason this past summer in the gym,” Tabone said. “She has brought consistent scoring and has been a steady point guard for our team.”

Tabone added that Mayo is the jokester of the team and always keeps a smile on her face.

“Her goofy personality is one of my favorite things about her,” Tabone said. “She always has a funny story to laugh about at practice.”

Tabone is “so incredibly proud” of Mayo for her accomplishments these past four years and feels that if “anyone deserves this milestone it would have to be her.”

Senior guard Emily Pinckney said Mayo has been a great teammate to play with and has seen her improvements year after year.

“She has really grown as a player and put a lot of time in to get to where she is now,” Pinckney said.

Pinckney explained that Mayo is a great leader for the women’s basketball team with her “lead by example” attitude.

“She’s unselfish, works hard and pushes others to work hard as well,” Pinckney said.

Pinckney said it is much deserved, and she is proud to have called Mayo her teammate and good friend over her four years at Utica College.
