The UC women’s basketball team hosted the Nazareth Golden Flyers on Thursday night in an Empire 8 matchup. In their last meeting, the Pioneers defeated Nazareth 62-56.
The first half was tight, but the Pioneers had a 33-30 lead at halftime.
In the first half Ashelyne Babb for Utica and Samantha Peebles for Nazareth played the full 20-minutes, which is something players are not usually asked to do.
The Pioneers didn’t lose their momentum in the second half as they held onto the lead for the rest of the game. They continued to be consistent on offense shooting 55.3 percent from the field and 68.8 percent from the free-throw line.
The Pioneers defeated the Golden Flyers 68-59. Junior Ashley Mayo led the Pioneers with 16 points and junior Samantha Peebles, who played all 40 minutes, finished with 27 points for the Golden Flyers.
Looking ahead, the Pioneers will begin a four-game road trip on Saturday as they take on St. John Fisher.
