The 2020 Syracuse Press Club award winners were announced on May 21, 2020 in a Facebook Live event.

Maria Montero Silva, this year’s Tangerine Editor-in-Chief, won two Syracuse Press Club awards on May 21.

The annual awards ceremony was canceled this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, winners were announced during a Facebook Live event.

Silva won second place in the print news story category for her article “When Halloween becomes racist,” which shed light on student and faculty concerns over costumes depicting minorities.

She also won third place in the print feature story category for “More than a hassle: The ordeal of menstruating as a homeless woman.” The feature addressed the stigmas and burdens many women and transgender individuals must cope with during their menstrual periods while living in the streets.

Silva, an international student from Spain, graduates this month with a degree in Communications and Media and will pursue a career in journalism.
