The Spring semester for some is stressful with internships, classes, jobs and other activities. This might make it difficult for students to mentally and physically take care of themselves. This time of the year tends to drag on because of weather and after holiday activities. It can leave people feeling at their lowest self.

Feeling this way in college happens often and many times students struggle to find ways to combat it.

“In order to destress I go to the gym on campus, I run on the treadmill for one mile,” Linnea Bush a junior in nursing said. “I like to sweat out all my toxins, it makes me feel good about myself and energized for my next day. Something that I do to ease my mind is I turn off the lights, light a candle and meditate for 10 minutes,” Bush said.

Additionally, Bush enjoys reading books which allows her to distract her mind from stressful things going on. Reading also lets her relax before bed making it easier to fall asleep.

Junior Nikki O’Hara said that when she feels stressed, she likes to go to the gym, take a hot shower and lay in bed in her pajamas and watch Netflix.

O’Hara said she also finds it relaxing to listen to music. Something that research has proven to be true as it helps decrease the levels of cortisol, a stress hormone.

Junior Antonio Viscusi said he also enjoys going to the gym to destress and get his mind off of things going on, making life hectic. Besides that, Viscusi likes to take a step back and put things in perspective.

“The biggest thing I do to relieve stress is I try really hard to look at the bigger picture of things in life, such as having the opportunity to go to college, have a roof over my head and food on the table,” he said.

Looking at things from a larger perspective makes Viscusi less stressed and motivates him to conquer any obstacles in his way, pushing him to prove himself wrong and take on what is stressful in his life.
