Snow has already arrived in Central New York and many students have different takes on how they feel in terms of the cold weather.

During the beginning of the semester, the weather was relatively calm.  Just as quickly as fall arrived, winter came even faster, beginning to drop light snow, which later gave way to a snowstorm, causing some professors to cancel classes. For some, this is not a bother as they are well prepared for the winter.

Jacob Gerson, a junior who majors in cybersecurity, said he likes the snow. Gerson is from Colorado and commented on how gray Utica’s weather can be. He came prepared for the snow and has been staying warm by wearing warm clothes, staying by heaters and through his own mental fortitude.

“I’m a big snowboarder and I look at it like if it’s snowing (then I can snowboard),” Gerson said. “Here it’s snowing in the mountains.”

Junior Alicia Fernandez isn’t a fan of the cold temperatures and wished it was still warm out.

“I don’t like how messy and wet it is and I’m not prepared for the early winter because I really dislike the cold,” Fernandez said.  “I try to stay warm by staying indoors, wearing lots of hoodies and wrapping myself in blankets.”

People from all over the world have found many ways to adapt to the cold and stay warm in frigid temperatures. Some examples include wrapping up in blankets, wearing gloves, scarves, hats, jackets, and boots. Others involve wearing layers under your clothing when going outside or investing in clothing that retains body heat so you barely feel the cold when you venture outside.  

Despite all of the problems winter brings, it does have to provide beauty and fun. Some winter activities to enjoy include snowboarding, skiing, ice-skating, snowball fights and ice fishing just to name a few.

Hunter Reed, a freshman majoring in health studies, said he is used to the snow because he lives in Buffalo. Reed said winters in Buffalo can be brutal and that he’s more than prepared for the weather. To stay warm he dresses appropriately and tries to stay inside as much as possible.

“I don’t mind it as long as it’s a limited amount and it’s around Christmas,” Reed said.
