“We Are UC” highlights the people who thread the fabric of the Utica College community. These profiles are written from the perspective of the subjects themselves.

My name is Patricia Gortman, and I came to UC because of the small class sizes that I was used to in high school. I’m happy at UC because I’ve remained very involved since my freshman year, and I wouldn’t change the fact that I chose this school. It’s a small school, and I actually get the opportunity to know the people that go here. It wasn’t exactly what I expected it to be when I first started out, but it wasn’t a disappointment. I still ended up having fun and enjoying my time here.

What makes UC unique in my eyes is how easy it is to communicate with faculty and administration. You can shoot them emails, and even a phone call, to send out personal invites to them but at other schools it would take a prolonged period of time to talk to just one person. I like being able to communicate with and see members from the president’s cabinet out at events and around campus.

I remained active within the organizations that I’ve been apart of throughout my time here. I’ve been in the Black Student Union since my freshman year, which I was president of for two years and am currently the student advisor. I’ve been a part of Women In a New Direction since my junior year, and I am currently the corresponding secretary. I also joined the Student Government Association this year. I joined these organizations because they serve a purpose, and I felt like helping to make that purpose known and spreading the philanthropy of these organizations to the rest of the school and helping to make a change.

When I was younger, I actually wanted an office job so that I can sit down and feel comfortable. But, as I’m getting older, I realize that I like doing things to help people and spreading messages and awareness. Now, I just want to be an advocate for things that serve a purpose.

When it comes to time management, I feel like I can handle my time a lot better now. But, I usually don’t write my tasks down; I just remember them and make mental notes and lists of what I have to do for each task.

The time I’ve spent here has made me feel accomplished. The things I got to experience and the people I have gotten to meet have made this journey well worth it. I had the opportunity to inspire the people around me, and I learned a lot about myself, which I will take with me in the future.
