Space issues in fitness center raise concerns

During spring break this semester, Utica College lost its sports dome due to a big snowstorm. With no dome, there are limited resources for students and athletes to get their workouts in. Now everyone has to use the Gary M. Kunath Fitness Center in the Clarke Athletic Center on campus, and that isn’t flying so well with some UC students.

Sophomore men’s basketball player Donald Malone thinks the space in the fitness center has now diminished and it is affecting the workouts of the ones who are working out.

“I think the lack of space and equipment availability messes with the efficiency of everyone’s workout,” Malone said.

Malone also feels that with the crowd in the fitness center being so high, it becomes a safety issue as well.

Senior Dylan Drexler is a student who is very dedicated to fitness, “Unfortunately, as we all know, the collapse of the dome has put a huge burden on everyone here at UC, but especially on the ones who use the weight room regularly like myself,” Drexler said. “When the dome was still standing, all of the sports teams had the opportunity to use the weight room in there for their weight training, but now all of the athletes have to use the main weight room in the athletic center, which becomes extremely crowded.”

Drexler loves to see students get after it and he loves the intensity, but he feels that the fitness center is “starting to look like a zoo.”

UC Athletic Director David Fountaine says he is hoping to get the dome up and running as soon as possible

“We are currently working with the insurance company,” Fontaine said, “In the meantime, students, student-athletes, faculty and staff are working together and sharing facilities at the main Clark Athletic Center.”
