As most of you know, winter storm Stella hit Utica and plenty of other areas in and around New York, causing inconveniences for countless people. Some of these inconveniences still linger from the damage Stella caused and this includes the deflating of Utica College’s dome.

The collapsing of the dome has seriously impacted almost all sports at the college, even the ones that aren’t in season. The track and field team has been affected the most.

Carlton Woodie, a junior at UC, states, “Change is never easy, but the changes of our practice schedule has been far more difficult than I anticipated.” Woodie and his teammates have had practice at 6 a.m. every day of the week just to be able to take a bus to neighboring college facilities such as Hamilton College and Mohawk Valley Community College.

Despite not having a facility to call their own and the adversity the track team has to face, Woodie maintains a positive outlook on the issue.

“This experience will only bring our team closer together and it is going to make winning the Empire 8 championship taste that much sweeter,” said Woodie.

Besides the dome collapsing, there were plenty of other students affected by this storm while they were home. UC junior Jack Anten is from Rochester and had to deal with a little more than just over two feet of snow.

“A lot of people including myself were still struggling to get our power back on from the previous wind storm prior to Stella,” said Anten. “It took four days to get our power back on because of the snow storm making it difficult for the workers to fix the issues.”

Stella was not friendly to those who had spring break plans that involved flying either. UC freshmen Joanna Gaertner had plans to fly to Florida for vacation with her sister until her flight was cancelled.

“Once our flight was cancelled on Monday, I had a feeling we weren’t going on this trip anymore,” Gaertner said. “As it turned out, I was right, our flight was rescheduled for Thursday and we could no longer go.”
