Utica University is offering counseling and support for anyone grieving the loss of James Salles, a Utica student who died in an off-campus accident on Nov. 21.
A crisis counselor from the Utica Police Department with the UPD therapy dog will be on campus Monday, Nov. 25 from 10 a.m. to noon in Strebel Lounge, according to Ariel Rios, executive director for Student Health and Wellness.
“We have a number of licensed counselors who can meet with students about any issues that they would like and can help process their grief around James Salles’s passing,” Rios said. “Services are free and confidential to students and are available Monday -Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.”
The following help is available to the Utica University community:
- Individual counseling and walk-in sessions are available in 204 Strebel Center.
- Group counseling for groups wanting to process their grief together is available in 207 Strebel Center.
- Utica University has a partnership with UWill, a teletherapy provider that focuses on colleges. Students can make an appointment by signing up at app.uwill.com using their Utica email address. Appointments are available seven days a week and there are providers who speak a variety of languages. UWill also offers a 24/7 crisis line if someone needs immediate help at (833) 646-1526.
- The university can also help students connect with community providers if they do not wish to use Utica University counseling services and would like to use their own health insurance coverage to see a different provider.
