10 Things You Didn’t Know About Ghana

After speaking with sophomore, Calvin Mends, who is originally from Ghana, he shared:
- Ghana is located in West Africa which isn’t a very large country, but it is widely known.
- The capital city of Ghana is Accra.
- Ghana is very hot, feeling like summer all year round.
- The Elmina Castle, which was a fort used for slaves during the slave trade is located in Ghana. It is a very popular monument visited by many, including the Obama family.
- Most holidays are celebrated the same in Ghana as they are here in the U.S. However, Ghana is a very religious country, so for religious holidays such as Christmas and Easter, many attend church.
- On Christmas Eve, Ghanaians dedicate an entire church service to singing carols.
- There are a number of different tribes in Ghana and each tribe has its own language.
- The most popular sport in Ghana is football, better known as soccer in the U.S.
- Vic Mensa is a famous Ghanaian rapper who was signed by Jay-z’s Roc Nation label.
- There are currently 10 regions in Ghana that are further divided into 216 local districts.
