With the holiday season quickly approaching, many begin to think about when it’s an appropriate time to put up decorations, lights, trees, snowmen, festive signs and ornaments are some of the items that are used to brighten up a place for the holidays. 

But is it ever too soon to put up such decorations? 

Students at UC have various thoughts about putting up Christmas decorations early, but feel as though decorating can bring happiness to everyone, no matter what time they get put up. Some say before December is too early, but others think that it’s the perfect time. 

Sophomore Corinne Murphy appreciates the happiness and joy on people’s faces when they put up decorations. However, Murphy doesn’t put her decorations up until the weekend after Thanksgiving. 

“My family is traditional where we would put glass figurines of Jesus, Mary and Joseph under the tree,” Murphy said. “Besides that, anything that sparkles catches my eye, like the outdoor Christmas lights.” 

Senior Leland Frink doesn’t mind putting up Christmas decorations early, even if it is during November.

“You can easily get it out of the way when putting decorations up early instead of waiting until the last minute,” Frink said. “I usually put up decorations around mid-late November or early December. I like putting up the tree and decorating it with ornaments.” 

Fellow senior Delanna Richardson is a Christmas enthusiast and enjoys seeing Christmas lights outside of people’s homes, the different holiday crafts people create and how families different from hers decorate their Christmas trees.

“I normally put up Christmas decorations after Thanksgiving,” Richardson said. “I would assume people are decorating for Christmas early in order to support the holiday and celebrate.”

Many would agree that decorating around the holiday truly brings the holiday spirit alive. Along with decorating early for Christmas, lots of families have special traditions including cutting down a live tree, making cookies or building a snowman. Families even have traditional ways of how they decorate the house.

Christmas trees fill many homes around the holidays and is a staple element within the home, along with stockings hung across the fireplace mantle and lights outside on the house. 

“I think a Christmas tree is essential for a decoration,” Murphy said. 

With the holiday season coming upon us, it’s important to remember the true meaning of Christmas but also enjoy the magical moments and time spent with those you love.
