Old Career Services and Student Success office remains vacant until further notice.
The First Source Federal Credit Union Trading Room, located in 115 Hubbard Hall, is no longer a computer lab for students to use before or after class if they need to print something or do some research. Instead, this room became the Center for Career and Professional Development, which was originally located in 122 White Hall.
Jeffery Gates, senior vice president for student life and enrollment management, explained that this move was needed to enhance the services that UC offers to its students.
“The Center for Student Success was moved in August 2018,” Gates said. “We have been looking for opportunities to put offices together in terms of physical space that serve students.”
He mentioned that the Center for Student Success has expanded and so did the services in the Center for Career and Professional Development by hiring two career coaches “to better serve students during their four years at UC.”
Some students, such as senior Jesus Garcia, were upset by the change when he discovered that the office had moved to the lab.
“I did not like the move whatsoever,” he said. “I liked the two-screen computers because I used to get a lot of work done.”
Garcia also felt as if this computer lab brought a sense of professionalism to students when they were using this lab.
“It was a room that people could have seen what you were doing so in a way it forced the students to make sure that they presented them well. Also the two screen felt very sophisticated and it was very cool when using the computers,” he said.
Garcia said he thinks that the Center for Career and Professional Development should move back to its location in White Hall.
“It’s really hard to know where the offices are when every year there is a new office moving somewhere new,” he said.
Despite the way students feel about this change, Matthew Carr, who is the vice president for college infrastructure, said that room 115 will not be made back into a computer lab and students can instead go to the library or use the classroom/lab that is located in room 260 in Gordon Science Center.
The First Source Federal Credit Union Trading Room was moved to the Brvenik Center for Business Education at Clark City Center.
“This provides computer lab resources to students at that location,” Carr said.
The college explored different options for the relocation of this center but ultimately Hubbard 115 seemed to be the best move.
There are no future plans for 122 White Hall at the moment. The Internal Space Committee is working to determine the future plans for this room.
