Garrett Pratt of New Hartford, a health sciences and psychology dual major, was named Utica University’s Class of 2025 valedictorian, the university announced on May 6.
This year’s salutatorian is John “Jack” Hrustich III, a cybersecurity major and computer science minor from Owego.
Following graduation, Pratt plans on applying to mortuary science school to become a licensed funeral director. He is a graduate of New Hartford Senior High School.
Pratt said he was shocked and humbled to be named the class of 2025 valedictorian, explaining that Utica University is special to him and he is grateful to represent the university in this way.
“Although reaching this point required a great deal of effort, I was given so much in return,” Pratt said. “I will always cherish the relationships and opportunities that Utica provided during my time here.
He expressed his deepest thanks to Utica University faculty, staff and students who made his experience memorable and said he is “indebted to all of you for making Utica University the special place that it is.”
Hrustich plans to pursue a cybersecurity career in the private sector before eventually pursuing an advanced degree in cybersecurity.
When Hrustich found he was named salutatorian, he was also surprised and excited. He said his time at Utica shaped who he is today.
“I have been able to expand my skill set in preparation for a career and meet some amazing people who have supported me throughout my time here,” Hrustich said. “I could not have made it on my own. I want to thank my amazing friends, family and professors for all their support, but most of all my lord and savior Jesus Christ.”
Undergraduate commencement ceremonies will be held on Friday, May 9 at 5 p.m. at the Adirondack Bank Center at the Utica Memorial Auditorium.
