Utica University celebrated National Coming Out Week from Oct. 7 -11 with various events on campus. The Gender Sexuality Alliance (GSA), Provost’s Office and Campus Engagement departments hosted multiple events throughout the week, including Coming Out Day Stories, Gayraoke and a musical titled “Crystal Clear.”
Coming Out Stories took place in Pioneer Cafe to start the week. This event allowed LGBTQ+ members to share their experiences with a group of people who could relate to and empathize with their stories. Students, staff, and other special guests attended the event sharing stories, spending time together, and standing in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community.
“I am lucky where my immediate family accepts me and I know they welcome anyone else with open arms,” President of GSA, Kate Vaughn said. “It’s why I said if you didn’t have a welcoming one, mine was open for you.”
GSA hosted their monthly Gayraoke (GSA/Gay Karaoke) in the Wilcox Center. Everyone was welcome to come sing, hang out with friends, and eat some good food at this event.
“I had fun at Gayraoke because even though I didn’t want to sing, I still got to meet new people and eat good food,” said sophomore Liv Lieder. “I will definitely try to make it again next month and bring my volleyball teammates with me.”
The library also set up a display of LGBTQ+ books to celebrate National Coming Out Week. This display celebrated queer authors and queer storylines and was titled “More Than Words.” This also showcased poetry and memoirs of queer writers. Then, to round out the week, Utica University’s Theatre Club performed the musical production of “Crystal Clear,” written by two Utica residents.
