For the first time since 1916, the Red Sox and Dodgers are competing in the World Series against one another.
The Dodgers are returning for their second consecutive World Series appearance, coming off last year’s loss to the Houston Astros, while the Red Sox last won it all in 2013.
The two storied franchises will meet for a third time on Friday, Oct. 26, in Los Angeles.
The top two aces, Chris Sale and Clayton Kershaw, took the mound in Game 1 where Boston’s offense dominated Kershaw. Kershaw gave up five earned runs on seven hits in his four-inning performance. Four of the seven hits came from the bat of left-fielder Andrew Benintendi, who became the fourth player aged 24 or younger with four hits in a World Series game, according to ESPN.
Diehard Red Sox fan Adam Ziobrowski was ecstatic over this win and about his team making it to the World Series after watching them this season.
Ziobrowski was in attendance for Game 1 of the ALDS against the Yankees and Game 1 of the ALCS against the Astros, but unfortunately, he will not be able to attend the World Series because the ticket prices are over $500. So, Ziobrowski will be watching every game from his couch this year.
In terms of favorite memories, Ziobrowski went to David Ortiz’s final game in 2016 with his dad and said just being there in person and being able to share a bond with his dad over baseball is something that he will appreciate and remember for the rest of his life and something that he will tell his kids and grandkids someday.
Senior Tim Quinlan also has the Red Sox winning the World Series this year.
“As much as it pains me to say it being a Yankee fan, I think the Red Sox are going to win the World Series,” Quinlan said. “There were three 100 team wins this year, all of which in the American League. And the Red Sox destroyed the Yankees 3-1 in the series and rolled past the Astros 4-1. I just don’t think any team can beat them this year.”
As a UC baseball player, Quinlan feels like he sees the game of baseball differently than other fans.
“Most people think that baseball is boring because it is slow and not much happens quickly,” Quinlan said. “It’s not a sport that can be performed better by simply playing harder. It’s more skill based than that and is supposed to be like chess and a lot of people don’t see the small details that a current player would see that make the difference.”
Junior Dan Piersma is also a Yankee fan but said there is no doubt that Boston will win the World Series.
“The way they’ve been playing this year, I don’t see how they could lose,” Piersma said. “Alex Cora, in only his rookie year as manager, has turned this team into a serious threat for many years to come. They will win off of talent and heart.”
Piersma was born in 1998, so he has only been alive for five of the 27 Yankees’ World Series victories, but he has a few memories that he cherishes.
“The first thing that comes to my mind is Derek Jeter’s walk-off home run in game four of the 2001 World Series to become Mr. November because that is the first home-run hit in November in MLB history, but I really only remember that from watching videos because I was only 3 years old at the time,” Piersma said. “In terms of memories that I remember watching, I would have to say watching the final out of the 2009 World Series because there’s just no better feeling than watching your team win.”
Junior Tiffany Simmons witnessed her favorite MLB team, the New York Mets, in their most recent World Series appearance in 2015, but this year she will be watching and rooting for the Red Sox with her father.
“I’m a religious fan of baseball and just watching the World Series makes my heart happy,” Simmons said. “I get excited for whoever I’m rooting for like I’ve been fans of them for years. This World Series is a little more special, however, because my dad has been a Sox fan for as long as I can remember, so I’m really excited for him.”
